Featured Skater: Will Whittington
When you first meet Will Whittington your first impression might be that he's a quiet, shy kid. Or maybe that he's a little timid. But once you see him out in the park, your whole mindset will be completely changed. Because you see, the air Will can achieve is anything but low key. We got a chance to interview him.
Calvary Skate Park: Alright Will, your name?
Will Whittington: I'm Will Whittington; I'm twelve.
CSP: What grade are you in?
WW: I'm in sixth grade.
CSP: What stance are you?
WW: I'm regular.
CSP: How long have you been skating?
WW: About 5 years.
CSP: How long have you been skating Calvary?
WW: About 5 years.
CSP: Now you said this is the first place you skated?
WW: Oh yeah. My dad took me here when I was about 6 or 7. Somewhere in there. He just got me started here and he got me a little Tony Hawk Birdhouse and I just kept riding around the park and learning how and I fell in love with it.
CSP: Nice. Do you ride for anybody?
WW: I ride for 4D's.
CSP: Best trick you've ever done at Calvary.
WW: Um, definitely the nose flip finger flip over the snowboard jump.
CSP: Thats sick. Do you attend SkateChurch? How long have you been attending?
WW: Yeah, about 3 and a half years.
CSP: What is your favorite thing about SkateChurch?
WW: I really like the messages, you guys do a good job, and just being able to skate in a christian environment is awesome.
CSP: Right on. And how long have you been a christian?
WW: All my life. Well I gave my life to Christ when I was about 5, but I've been coming to Calvary ever since my very first sunday of being alive.
CSP: What do you think about the current skate culture as a whole?
WW: Well, I've noticed a little bit of good stuff, but it's been pretty rough. Like, there's so much cussing and I don't know. It's just a bad example, all of it.
CSP: What do you consider yourself: Vert or Street? What kind of skater do you consider yourself?
WW: Vert. I like Vert. The bowl, I like all that stuff.
CSP: What do you think about prayer?
WW: Prayer is- I love it. It's my time to talk to God. It's just something important to me. I love prayer, it's always important to me.
CSP: What do you think about reading the Word, the bible?
WW: I love it. It really helps me out. I mean, with problems in the world nowadays it helps me to know God's there for me and when I have his word I comforted because I know that everything's going to be alright.
CSP: How do you think you can use skating to represent Christianity or the Lord?
WW: By just telling other kids, "Man, that's not right," or just showing them skating through Christ and just showing Him. You know, and just spreading the Word at parks. Thats what Christ wants us to do, so I'm just trying hard to not fall into Satan's little trap.
CSP: Right on. What are your plans this year as far as skating goes?
WW: As far as skating, you know skate for the Lord. I want to try and get a couple more sponsors. I'm really working on that; it's pretty hard though. It's just hard. Make a lot more videos and just win as many comps as I can and just attend as many comps as I can get into.
CSP: Is there anything interesting you want to tell us before we let you go?
WW: Just follow Christ. Live, grow, and know that He's there for you. Because all things happen through Him, so if anything, praise God.
That concluded our time with Will Whittington. Stay tuned for April's second Featured Skater.
